Music is an integral element of Roman Catholic worship. The two choirs at Saint Agnes sing a wide variety of repertoire ranging from Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony to modern anthems and motets. The choral music is selected to complement the readings and prayers of the day. Both choirs seek to make compelling music that is serious, universal, and inspiring, in the hope that the liturgical music can enhance the prayers from all who are present.
SCHOLA CANTORUM
The Schola Cantorum is normally a professional quartet that provides choral music for the 11AM and 12:30PM Masses on Sundays, as well as other special liturgies throughout the year. In addition, members of the Schola rotate as cantors for the Saturday 5:10PM anticipated Mass, the Sunday 5PM Spanish Mass, and the 5:10PM Mass on holy days of obligation.
Until April 2022, the Schola sang for the Traditional Latin Mass on Sundays.
Singers who are interested in auditioning for the choral substitute list should email Eva Sze, the Director of Music, to schedule an appointment: [email protected]
PARISH CHOIR
The Parish Choir is a volunteer group that sings for the Sunday 7PM Mass from mid-September to mid-May. Membership consists of accomplished amateurs and music directors from other parishes in New York City.
